Hold regular departmental meetings for case discussions and topics of interest
Offer a 6-month Thoracic Anaesthesia Advanced Training Module or Fellowship at Guy’s Hospital
Promote advanced airway management regional anaesthesia for thoracic surgery
Undertake original research in paravertebral blockade in lung cancer surgery, ParaSOL, supported by the European Society of Regional Anaesthesia (ESRA)
Our STORY
We work in the largest of 35 thoracic units in the UK, operating on about 1500 patients per year. We were one of the first to use minimally invasive surgery, and robotic assisted thoracic surgery and lung resection in the UK.
Thoracic operations performed are:
Lung resection for cancer (566 resections per year) – minimally-invasive surgery, open thoracotomies, tracheobronchial resection, complex cases with Head and Neck Cancer and Oesophageal Surgery teams
Rigid bronchoscopy – tracheobronchial dilatation and stenting
Pleural disease surgery – malignant effusions and invasion, infective disease, bullectomy
Interventional radiology – SVC stenting, vascular embolisation
We are a team of fourteen thoracic anaesthetists running daily operating lists at the tertiary referral centre for South East London. We work closely with our surgeons to promote minimal access surgery, regional anaesthesia, and early mobilisation to champion enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways for our patients.

WHO WE ARE
We are a team of fourteen Consultant Thoracic Anaesthetists running daily operating lists at Guy's hospital.
We aim to promote collaborative team working with surgeons, theatre and ward nurses, physiotherapists.
Our interests are one-lung ventilation, difficult airway management, regional anaesthesia, perioperative care of high-risk patients, and enhanced recovery.
Our group is based at Guy’s Hospital but our activities are separate from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. Proceeds from the course are used for thoracic anaesthesia advancement and education and do not benefit the individuals who contribute their time and expertise.
